Assignment 23 - Your Venture's Unfair Advantage

Below is a list of resources that my venture possesses:

  1. Backing by the University of Florida's Planning Design & Construction that would utilize the software
    1. Value - The University of Florida has a pipeline of over $128 Million in projects tracking through the next 8 months alone, much of which will be LEED-certified projects...
    2. Rare - This client is rare in that it carries one of the highest annual funds for the construction of any University in the country.  What UF does, many universities tend to soon follow.
    3. Inimitable - This capital could be imitable in that there are several other universities with similar capacities that could create this partnership with a competitor that may follow.
    4. Non-Suitable - Yes there are other resources in other universities and high-volume developers that could provide a similar benefit, however, it would not pose a threat, but an expanding opportunity for the venture.
  2. Backing by Scorpio, a construction company in town that would utilize the software
    1. Value - Backing from a construction company that has financial capital is significant to start up the venture and have a contractor that is willing to be involved in Beta Testing and sharing with other contractors in town.
    2. Rare - This client is rare in their connection with the community of Gainesville and their unique people that are very inclined toward business development.  I also work here.
    3. Inimitable - This could be imitable with other contractors in town, but Scorpio stands out on a marketing and business development perspective
    4. Non-Suitable - There are other resources in town.
  3. Human capital within a trade market (Matt Backensto with Taylor Cotton & Ridley) that would serve as an ambassador of the product to his manufacturers.
    1. Value - Yes, TCR has a lot of connections with manufacturers across the country that are highly used in the construction industry
    2. Rare - No, this connection wouldn't be considered rare, as many other connections with subcontractors could link us to other manufactures.
    3. Inimitable - This would not be imitable by other software competitors unless they have the human and social capital of having already created these relationships in a prior career.
    4. Non-Suitable - They are a suitable connection, but there are many other connections that would be just as suitable.
  4. Several connections with manufacturers, contractors, & owner/client groups in town that would likely be open to a trial run of the software.
    1. Value - This is highly valuable in creating a clientele base that expands much further than just one sector (i.e. contractors) but also with manufacturers and others
    2. Rare - This connection would not be rare, as many people have similar relationships in their respective areas
    3. Inimtable - Yes it is imitable
    4. Non-Suitable - Not many other variations of this resource would provide the same benefits.
  5. Human capital with a partner who is skilled with software development and could help me navigate through starting up the service.
  6. Social capital with my charismatic abilities to connect with others and sell them this product
  7. Social capital with my large array of connections and relationships in Gainesville and the southeast region for suppliers and manufacturers
  8. The financial capital of possessing personal funds to afford to start-up the software.
  9. The financial capital of by having the support of a few business owners in town that would be prospective investors in the software.
  10. The drive to build a culture within the venture that is unique, authentic, serving, and shines as a light with client relations similar to that of Chick Fil A, Publix, and Southwest Airlines.
The first resource may be the most valuable because of the financial capital that they possess with their surplus of jobs, the human capital that I've created within their department, and with the social capital that they have with hundreds of other contractors and manufacturers throughout the world.

  1. Hi Jason,
While I understand where you were coming from in the ranking of all the resources, I think you still have a great list that exemplifies support and insight from a lot of different aspects. Pulling together from all the different areas of capital and market leaders, I can see how you are working to create a thriving business and organizational culture.
