ENT 3003 - Entrepreneurship Class Blog

I have definitely had to make some adjustments to my work style for this class over the past couple of months.  Here are some of my takeaways: I have developed routine behaviors to conquer through this class on a weekly basis.  I had to learn the hard way to have a scheduled time to crunch out these blog posts and to not wait until the last second.  One week early on, I had realized that the posts were due at 12:00 PM (noon) rather than midnight on Fridays, so I had to leave a work meeting early and hit pause on my actual job to get the posts submitted on time.  No bueno to say the least. There are often times where my Senioritis hits hard and I wonder if I really care that much about my grade so long as I pass.  I pulled my way through by reminding myself that I didn't want to get into a bad rhythm that made it harder on me in the end.  If there's any time where I'm going to slack off, it's going to be in the end when I know that I have the wiggle room...

The book I chose was Elon Musk:  Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future  by Ashlee Vance. Through my readings, here is what I discovered: I was surprised most by Elon Musk's personality and soft skills.  Though he has a very venturous man who has accomplished many entrepreneurial goals in life, I expected him to be more of a masculine and "political" person in regards to his character by being outspoken and very charismatic, however, I came to find that he is more reserved in his nature. Elon Musk has a drive unlike any other, which I truly admire.  He has a very creative mind--one that continues to push the envelope in technological development.  I love how his drive caused him to not just settle with just one idea or one successful business acquisition (such as Zip2, SpaceX, Tesla, or any of his other ideas. The segment that I will focus on is contractors and manufacturers that will primarily collaborate to gather documentation for material credits on LEED and other sustainable accreditation processes. I reached out to three people.  Jack McDonald, a former coworker who now works for a large construction company that is involved in sustainable construction.  Mitch Bledsoe, a representative for Hilti, a large scale manufacturer of construction products, and my coworker, Aaron Rogers, who is LEED AP certified and has achieved LEED certification on multiple projects. The need exists the most in preconstruction when the project sustainability requirements are being discussed.  The team typically gets together to plan the best way to go about accreditation and divides up credits to each party.  The need becomes most salient in this time, when the contractor or others would search Google for "how to gather documents for LEED certification" or "what is required for LEED cre...

Further conclusions on the aforementioned hypothesis of building a database to assist in the documentation process for LEED or other sutainable certifications based on 5 additional interviews with from my fellow coworkers: Who - Though LEED is continually growing to become more and more predominant in commercial construction, there are still many contractors that simply do not have a need for a software to assist in the LEED documentation because many work on smaller renovation or buildout projects that do not include any requirements for sustainability.  Another reason contractors may not use LEED would be residential contractors, which fall out of the encompassment of LEED. The Opportunity The opportunity lies within creating a database software that compiles information on materials and designs in ONE place that can be provided for companies moving forward. The Product The product would be a simple database software that compiles products and information on systems and provides EXACTLY what is looked for to achieve specific credits for LEED certification.  This could be a subscription-based website that could include an integrative system where manufacturers and consumers alike can go into the database and enter information on specific products.   For instance, 3M, one of the largest manufacturer of materials and goods (several used in construction) in the world, would be able to sign into the software and upload documentation and information for all of their products.  Each product uploaded would have its own page which specifies EVERYTHING, from pre-consumer & post-consumer recycled content, to location of manufacturer ...

Opportunity There is a huge inefficiency in controlling and processing documentation for LEED certification. Who People who share this need are all the main players in constructing a project: Owners/Clients, Architects & Engineers, and General Contractors What There is a need for software that better documents information on products and models and serves as a database for future encounters with LEED Certification.  The database would be able to track all the necessary items that LEED looks for to earn credits, such as location of manufacturer, raw material makeup, FSC Certification, material costs, etc. Why Currently, gathering documents, costs, and origins is a very difficult process that cause LEED documentation to require months worth of work to be balanced with everyone else's daily tasks. Economic Opportunities As the Coronavirus continues to spread in China, the need for methods of detecting the virus in people climbs across the world. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-51386575 This information shows the economic crises that are being spurred by the coronavirus across a wide range of sectors in and out of China, such as Ikea & Starbucks.  As more sectors of the world's economy (i.e. Flights, Hotels, etc.) continue to see this virus impact their sales, the need to detect the virus globally becomes more vital. The prototypical customer to this opportunity for further medical research would be governmental agencies such as Customs as well as public and private sector organizations such as airlines and hotels across the board. The opportunity is difficult to exploit, as methods to tracing the virus go beyond a blood sample, but defining recent historical travel and exposure in relative areas to individuals.
