Assignment 21 - Reading Reflection No. 2
Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirkey
- What was the general theme or argument of the book?
- The general theme of this book is to display the transformation of more active pursuits in the growing free time of the social population which effervesces in today's society with the ever-developing social media platforms and other active routes to spend free time rather than passive pursuits such as mindlessly watching TV or consuming alcohol.
- How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
- In my opinion, this book connects with ENT 3003 because it highlights the idea that these active pursuits in people's free time is directly connected with the entrepreneurial mind in developing a real business off of an idea that is usually found through this active thinking.
- If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
- The excercise would be to have students monitor how they spend their free time. Remind the students to not do anything out of the ordinary with their free time, but document how it is spent and classify each activity (from sleeping, to watching TV, to spending time on social media, to working out, and so-on and so-forth). I feel like this would give students the ability to truly see how active they are with their free time and how it differs from the societal standards in the past (i.e. prior to social media, browsing the internet, and other outlets of active pursuits)
- What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
- My biggest "aha" moment would likely be the perspective of social media and internet browsing being viewed as an "active pursuit." I was taken back as I feel like these methods of spending free time are more mindless than others.
Hi Jason,
ReplyDeleteYour analysis of this book was really interesting and made me want to read this book for myself as well. To read that your biggest ‘aha’ moment was when the author stated that social media and internet browsing were examples of active pursuit surprised me as well. People usually correlate spending time scrolling through social media as a waste of time, so it was a surprise to see that Shirkey did not see it this way.
